काबुल के गवर्नर के प्रवक्ता हाफिज़ुल्लाह बशारत ने कहा कि राजधानी के बाहरी इलाके में एक घर गिरने से आठ लोगों की मौत हो गई और एक बच्चा घायल हो गया. उन्होंने कहा कि सभी एक ही परिवार के सदस्य थे. काबुल भूकंप के सेंटर से लगभग 290 किलोमीटर (180 मील) दक्षिण-पश्चिम में है.
भूकंप के सेंटर के पास के इलाकों से किसी नुकसान या चोट की तुरंत कोई रिपोर्ट नहीं मिली है. यह इलाका दूर है और लोकल अधिकारियों को काबुल तक जानकारी भेजने में अक्सर कई घंटे लग सकते हैं. भूकंप का केंद्र 180 किलोमीटर से ज्यादा गहराई पर था, जिससे अफगानिस्तान और पाकिस्तान का एक बड़ा हिस्सा हिल गया. पाकिस्तान के मौसम विभाग के मुताबिक पाकिस्तान में इस्लामाबाद, पेशावर, चित्राल, स्वात और शांगला शहरों और कस्बों में भूकंप महसूस किया गया. पाकिस्तान में किसी नुकसान या चोट की तुरंत कोई रिपोर्ट नहीं है.
अफगानिस्तान के हेल्थ मिनिस्ट्री के प्रवक्ता शराफत जमान ने कहा कि काबुल और राज्य के हेल्थ अधिकारियों को अलर्ट पर रखा गया है. पिछले अगस्त में पूर्वी अफगानिस्तान के एक दूर पहाड़ी हिस्से में आए 6.0 तीव्रता के भूकंप में 2200 से ज़्यादा लोग मारे गए थे, गांव जमींदोज हो गए थे और लोग मलबे में दब गए थे. ज्यादातर मौतें कुनार प्रांत में हुई जहाँ लोग आमतौर पर खड़ी घाटियों के किनारे लकड़ी और मिट्टी-ईंट के घरों में रहते हैं.
नवंबर में उत्तरी अफगानिस्तान के समांगन प्रांत में 6.3 तीव्रता का भूकंप आया, जिसमें कम से कम 27 लोग मारे गए और 950 से ज़्यादा घायल हुए. इससे ऐतिहासिक जगहों को भी नुकसान हुआ जिसमें मजार-ए-शरीफ शहर में अफगानिस्तान की मशहूर नीली मस्जिद और खुल्म में बाग-ए-जहाँ नामा पैलेस शामिल हैं.
